September has arrived, and not a moment too soon.
Our dead, straw-like grass is already turning green again after the first rainfall. It felt like the perfect time to visit Hewitt’s Farm to pick apples and stock up on some early-autumn pantry essentials.
The apple orchards were bare compared to previous years, due to the multiple heatwaves we suffered through over the summer. But I managed to forage enough to make a homemade apple and blackberry crumble, so I was content.
I always pick up a bottle of local Kent apple juice for making hot apple cider during the autumn months, as well as a jar of Hewitt’s Farm honey to sweeten bowls of porridge and warm drinks.
Hewitt’s Farm struggled with their pumpkin crop last year, so we were happily surprised to see fields bursting with huge orange pumpkins ready to be picked in October. Their kabocha harvest is already kicking off, with the biggest I’ve ever seen from them, and they had a glut of marrows that they were selling off for £1 each. So of course, I had to buy one!
It was so special to take Stockton to Hewitt’s Farm. We’ve been visiting for almost a decade, and it’s one of my favourite places. I cannot wait to take him pumpkin picking in October.
Speaking of Stockton, he’s growing up fast. So fast, in fact, that he grew right out of his puppy collar! I bought him a beautiful new one, covered in autumn leaves. I might have to buy him the matching harness too…
As a May puppy, all he’s ever known is the heatwave. So he was very confused when big drops of water started falling from the sky! I think he likes the cooler weather, though. We have lots of long, leafy walks ahead of us this autumn.
Just a short post today, as I wanted to share a handful of photographs and express my excitement for the arrival of my favourite season.
