I love the start of a new season. It’s the perfect opportunity for a declutter, a fresh start and a new mindset.
Summer is just around the corner, and I’ve been making room in my life for activities that allow me to really appreciate the warmer weather.
The most exciting thing happened last weekend: Hewitt’s Farm are now open for fruit and vegetable picking! I’ve been waiting for this moment since they closed their doors in November, as I love foraging for my own fresh produce.
So of course, you can guess what I was doing on Saturday.
We filled up my Tupperware collection with the most delicious, sweet strawberries. There were rows and rows of them, and I couldn’t stop picking!
It was so much fun to search for the ripest berries, gleaming like little jewels in the sunshine.
That afternoon, we sampled a classic British summertime treat – strawberries and cream! I popped out to the supermarket to buy a small carton of Alpro soya cream (which I didn’t even know existed until that point!) and savoured the combination of fresh berries and chilled cream. I ate them so fast, I completely forgot to take a photo!
We’ve been taking Fuji-chan for a lot of walks lately, and he’s thoroughly enjoying his first taste of warm weather. Isn’t this just the happiest dog you’ve ever seen?
On this particular day the grass seemed to stretch on for miles, and you could be forgiven for thinking we were strolling through the British countryside instead of a park in South East London!
Speaking of walking…
After a long hiatus, Elliott and I are officially addicted to Pokemon Go again.
It’s the perfect game to play during the warmer months, as you just want to be outside in the sunshine.
We’ve been pounding the pavements for hours every day, searching for elusive Pokemon (I’m now the proud owner of a Wigglytuff!) and just generally making the effort to spend more time with each other outdoors. It’s also a great excuse to walk down to our local Japanese stall and stuff ourselves with yasai katsu curry!
Along with fresh fruits and vegetables at Hewitt’s Farm, summertime also provides me with the opportunity to grow my own produce. I live in an apartment, so I don’t have much space for a vegetable garden. But I do have a kitchen windowsill and a rooftop, and I make sure to take full advantage of them!
Elliott and I made a trip to Polhill Garden Centre recently, and picked out a couple of tomato plants. They seem to have settled in well on my rooftop! I’m keeping my fingers crossed for cherry tomatoes in a few months along with kale and rocket, which are growing happily in small pots on my windowsill.
I was also gifted a little strawberry plant by Elliott’s mum, and I’ve been tending to it daily. I can’t believe how much it’s grown! I was hoping for fresh strawberries this summer, but after doing a little reading it sounds like I might have to wait until next year. I’ll have to be patient…
How are you celebrating the start of the warmer months?
