It's no secret that I'm a vegan (surprise, if you haven't read my blog name!) So you could be forgiven for assuming that I'm a little biased in my views towards animal products. But I have a confession to make: just a few short years ago, I was a complete meat junkie. I couldn't get enough of the stuff! I dined at steak restaurants as often as possible, made more trips to McDonalds than I'd like to admit and would have died rather than become a vegetarian - let alone a vegan.

I used to drink pretty regularly - I’d go out most weekends and often have a glass or two of wine during the week. It was an unconscious habit, and I just thought it was what I was supposed to do. I assumed that all teetotallers were recovering alcoholics or pregnant, and genuinely believed that getting routinely drunk was just a normal part of life.

I get the appeal of seafood, okay? I really do. I lived in New Zealand for half my life, surrounded by some of the best seafood in the world. I gorged on fresh scallops, oysters and prawns on a regular basis. Fishing was one of my favourite things to do on the weekend! Then I fell in love with Japan, the number one destination for sushi and sashimi - fresh from the ocean, of course. How could I resist?
