I’ve been getting creative this Christmas season – from knitting homemade scarves as gifts to making my own Christmas wreath, it’s been a lot of fun to try my hand at various festive crafts.
So when the time came to send out Christmas cards to friends and family, I decided to make my own.

These homemade Christmas cards couldn’t be easier to make – all you need is a selection of buttons, strong craft glue, peppermint-striped string and plain white card.
They’re also surprisingly cost-effective – I already owned most of the above, and only had to purchase a pack of buttons and white card from Amazon.
I was surprised at just how well these cards turned out – who knew that a few buttons, some string and a few simple drawings could look so festive?

I used Pinterest for inspiration, but I also created a few of the designs myself. My cards started off fairly basic, but as I grew in confidence I began to trust my skills and take a few more risks.
The penguins have to be my absolute favourite, while my husband loved the robins and the string of baubles.

I recommend choosing festive colours for your buttons, namely red, green and white, as those were the most prevalent colours in my designs. You can also add a tiny yellow button to serve as the star on top of the Christmas tree, or even experiment with clear buttons to make snowflakes.
It helps to map out the design before committing to glue, as this will give you the flexibility to move your design around and make any necessary changes. I simply laid out the buttons on the card until I was happy with how they looked before gluing them down.
This was such a cosy Christmas activity. I recommend listening to a Christmas playlist or watching a festive film while making your cards, and you can always treat yourself to a mince pie or a glass of homemade mulled wine when you’re done.
Just look at the view from my sofa, where I sat happily with my buttons and string for hours. The perfect Christmas scene!

If you have some spare time this December, I highly recommend making your own Christmas cards. They’re much more personal than the shop-bought versions, and it’s a great way to show your family and friends just how much you care.
