I always have big plans for this time of year. There are apples to pick, pumpkins to carve, leaves to crunch and scarves to knit.
But although I have the best of intentions, life just gets in the way sometimes. We moved into our first house during autumn last year and while it was exciting, it didn’t leave much time for appreciating the season.
I also got married in November 2021, so those autumn months flew by in a blur of wedding planning.
And as for 2020? I’m not even going to mention it.
As a result, I think I’m in need of a wonderfully cosy, spooky and magical season. I’ll be making it a priority to create space for all the little things that make autumn special.
This year, I’m going to be romanticising the autumn months.
To me it’s about doing things intentionally and mindfully, instead of simply moving through your day and letting things happen to you. Something small like getting dressed in the morning becomes fun when you take the time to put together a cute outfit that you saw on Pinterest, cleaning your home on the weekend becomes a cosy activity when you light a pumpkin spice candle and listen to an autumn playlist.
Romanticising the autumn months allows you to take normal and mundane activities and put a little spin on them to make them fun. Pretend to be Rory Gilmore next time you visit the library, and pick out a book to read under a tree later. Or maybe you’re the main character of a slightly cheesy book, visiting a quaint little town during autumn and falling in love at the local coffee shop.
There’s nothing wrong with a little imagination and whimsy sometimes!
Simple Ways To Romanticise The Autumn Months
- Decorate your home with pumpkins, wreaths and blankets
- Cook and bake with seasonal flavours like pumpkin and cinnamon
- Watch seasonal movies and TV shows such as Gilmore Girls and Hocus Pocus
- Create an autumn playlist – I have a dedicated blog post coming soon!
- Gather blackberries, apples and pumpkins to display in your kitchen and cook with
- Read a spooky book under a tree – I’m currently reading Autumn Chills by Agatha Christie
- Go for a walk or drive to admire the autumn leaves in your neighbourhood
- Visit a cemetery or a haunted location during October
- Go on a date to your local library archives and research the history of your town
- Put together a cute autumn outfit using my witchy lookbook, coming soon!
- Visit a museum or two – my favourite is the Natural History Museum here in London
- Watch an old scary movie like Nostradamus or The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari
- Learn to knit a cosy scarf – I have a simple beginner-friendly pattern coming soon
- Celebrate all the fun autumn holidays like Halloween, Bonfire Night and Thanksgiving
- Drink a warm mug of tea filled with all the spices and flavours of the season
- Light an autumn-scented candle – Bath and Body Works have the best selection
- Go thrifting for a cosy knitted jumper – fun and environmentally-friendly!
The best thing about romanticising the autumn months is that it doesn’t involve spending a lot of money.
It’s more about the feeling that it gives you – getting up early on a Sunday morning to watch Gilmore Girls with a homemade cinnamon bun, cooking with pumpkins and other seasonal produce, wearing your favourite cosy jumper on a walk in the woods.
You just can’t buy that feeling.
The summer months are officially drawing to a close next week, and I couldn’t be more excited. I hope you’ll join me in making everyday activities just that little bit more special this season.
