Celebrating The Changing Seasons

Life has a funny way of giving you exactly what you need, exactly when you need it.

Things had been feeling a little grey lately. The days all seemed to merge into one, and I almost felt like crawling into bed and hibernating until the summertime.

The weather was also letting me down. We’d been promised snow for weeks and hadn’t seen a wink of it, aside from the the odd flurry of white snowflakes that never seemed to amount to anything. How disappointing!

But I was taken by surprise when I drew back the curtains a few days ago. Those tentative little flurries had managed to find common ground, covering everything in a thick blanket of snow and turning London into a winter wonderland.

Of course I wasted no time, grabbing my coat (and Elliott!) and heading outside to explore this new landscape. We trekked through snow-covered forests, slid down icy mounds and finished off our adventures with a mug of white hot chocolate. It was the most fun we’d had in months!

This got me thinking. I’ve always prided myself on my ability to celebrate and embrace each new season, noticing the small changes that mark the passage of time. These simple things bring me the most joy, and yet I’ve been more focused on the negatives as of late.

What good is the warmth of summer without the chill of winter?’ said John Steinbeck, author of The Grapes of Wrath. How right he was!

It’s so easy to rush through life always focused on what’s around the corner, and forget to appreciate what we have right in front of us. Without the bleakness of winter, how will we every truly sink into the joy of a sweltering summer?

Every season is an opportunity to celebrate life, to give thanks and to live in the moment.

Springtime brings the cherry blossoms and daffodils, little bright spots in a once barren landscape. Now is the time to plant seeds and start the growing process, ready for a bountiful autumn harvest. This is the season of new life.

Summer promises an abundance of fresh fruits, filling my fridge with juicy mangoes, melons and strawberries. We take long walks in the sun and grill food on the BBQ for dinner, all while the smell of sunscreen seems to permeate everything.

Autumn is a time for harvesting and preserving the fruits of our labour. My kitchen countertops are cluttered with pumpkins and kabocha squash, and there always seems to be a jar or two of fresh blackberry jam or apple chutney just waiting to be eaten.

Winter is the season of hibernation, bringing flurries of snow (if we’re lucky!) and an icy chill that makes me never want to leave home again. I love wrapping up in long coats and knitted scarves for a stroll in the forest, and sitting down in the evening to a hearty soup served with crusty bread.

These simple rituals help me to make the most of each new season, and ensure that I stay mindful and appreciative of what I have right at this moment.

The sun will shine again, and the current restrictions will be lifted. But for now, I’m planning to appreciate the beauty of the snow and feel grateful for a warm bed at the end of the day.
